Dialog
KayLynn Deveney Dialog is a unique dual diary co-authored by Albert Hastings and photographer KayLynn Deveney that illuminates issues of domesticity, aging and solitude. In addition, though, it is a rare and thoughtful examination of the negotiation that takes place between photographers and the people they photograph.
Produced between 2001 and 2004 Dialog introduces Bert, now 89, through intimate and evocative color photographs that concentrate on his home life. To better understand Bert's reactions to the ways he was depicted, KayLynn asked him to caption small prints kept in a notebook. Bert's handwritten responses to the images of himself and his life recontextualize the photographs and add further dimension to the work.
This dialog between KayLynn's photographs and Bert's words tests the validity of both their perspectives. Together their visions and versions of Bert's domestic life sit side by side to create a new tale.
