Lien Botha

Based in Cape Town, Lien Botha is a multi-media artist whose career began in 1983 as a press photographer. She has had many one-person exhibitions in South Africa, and was awarded the Standard Bank Young Artist Award in 1997.

Her work in the Festival progamme deals with the past and present of South Africa by using photography, text and illustration. Groot Inkleurboek Safari (Great Colouring book Safari) takes drawings from a children’s book about taking a safari, which she has superimposed onto her own photographs of the South African landscape.

This play between landscape photographs and line drawings creates a supple way of opening-up possible ways of reading and understanding South African history.
