Cordelia Weedon: Cuba

Cuba, during the "Special Period" of austerity that has been Castro's reign, has been closed to visitors for a long time, and it is as though time stood still. The opening of access has given us the opportunity to see this "time capsule" culture and contrast it with the developed world of brands and technology that we know. In this combined piece of work, to be displayed on computer screens, Cordelia shows her view of Cuba, and illuminates the contrasts through the photo-diaries of groups of schoolchildren in Cuba and the UK.

Cordelia Wheedon has worked as a photographer for many years and is now photographic tutor and project co-ordinator at Photoworks in London. In 1998 she set up a Cuba link-up project which involved going to Cuba to photograph life in the 1990s. Also linking up children in Britain and Cuba through a photography project with the help of Arts Council funding. She has been involved with many other projects such as co-ordinating the Friends of Nepal exhibition, Lake Vyrnwy Sculpture Trail, Black Country route Sculptures, Royal Shrewsbury Hospital MS Project, BT Environmental Grant for Mencap Trackside Charcoal Project, Picture Researcher for Robert Graves Centenary, Gum Bichromate and Cyanotype Workshops.
