Richard Sawdon Smith: Body In-Visible

Influenced by the photography and writing of Jo Spence, Sawdon Smith has investigated the emotional effects of ill-health and the role of medical practice in how we perceive the diseased person/body. By referencing various medical style images not normally seen in a gallery setting, he addresses the way the medical world takes control of the body as the setting for the doctor/disease battle, particularly in relation to HIV/AIDS, with all the social overtones that attend that condition. This exhibition combines three pieces of Sawdon Smith's work that cover living with AIDS, the emotional effects of HIV and the relationship of the body to the medical institution. The work operates in our discomfort zone and is not for those who are not prepared to consider strong human issues and images.
