Su Grierson: Viewpoint

"Viewpoint" is an exploration of the way we use the land and how our acceptance of industrial installations may be seen to be like urban culture originated sculptures set in a rural backdrop. Our modern life is dependent upon large scale industrial enterprises whose buildings can transform and dominate their landscapes, and can be seen as having a beauty of sorts. In Su Grierson's video sequences and wide angle images, we pan through the countryside, taking in industrial complexes as installation pieces set in a rural context. But this seduction of the eye and brain masks the true nature of these places and their impact on our environment.

Su Grierson has for four years since MA graduation made computer and lens based work for gallery presentation as video projection or as monitor installations or individual lens based images. This work is highly visual, about perception, time and location. Collaborative projects mainly with dance have also been undertaken. During the last two years, inspired by exhibition and residency visits to Australia and New Zealand, her work, while remaining highly visual and perceptual, has developed 'content' about relationships with land. In particular she sees the gap between urban and rural life, the location of culture as an urban phenomenon, the changing relationship between the individual and the land and between land and the way we use it.
