Around the world every year, in places endowed with a numinous history, Christian believers conduct rituals in demonstration of their faith - sometimes bizarre self-abasement and painful self-abuse, sometimes intensely spiritual and cleansing experiences. Mike Abrahams has followed these people in their pilgrimages and his wonderful images show their performances in the theatres of religious ritual and pageantry. In doing so, he shows the power of religious faith and the role of ritual in perpetuating the Church's position in the lives of millions of people. Mike has received a World Press Photo 2000 Award (Daily Life Stories) for this piece of work.
