For this personal project, David had unparalleled access over six
years to the political lives of the senior members of the British
Tory party. He has documented their decline and fall, in images
that are as intimate as you can get with people as self-aware as
modern politicians.
Here we see the Tories up close, facing the press, in the broadcasting
studio, waiting in the wings of the conferences and on the stump,
meeting the electorate. Here are pedagogues and eccentrics, both
in the leadership and in their supporters; the declining constituency
of upper middle class Britons with their unchanging ways.
Here are fund-raising dinners; William Hague looking like a Dalek
at a conference; Michael Portillo's smarmy, smirking smiles; Ann
Widdecombe trying to be a populist; and Margaret Thatcher, the influence
that they can't shake off.
