In 1998 Oklahoma and Texas in
the United States suffered some of the worst droughts that they had
experienced for many years. Although the effects of "El Nino"
climatic changes, particularly in 1997, were reported form other parts
of the world, we are less aware of the repeated droughts that occur
in the United States.
Oklahoma was one of the worst drought hit areas in the 1930s "dustbowl"
era, so movingly recorded by the FSA photographers. Yet still the
climate continues to affect the lives of the farmers in unpredictable
ways. Zed Nelson's graphic images bring the reality to us again
of farming lives affected by the contingencies of the world's weather
systems.
