This powerful reportage work documents
the final stages of the decline of a traditional industry in the former
East German town of Gruben. Now better known for its right wing movement
and the death of an Algerian worker in 2000, the town's hat making
industry goes back nearly 180 years and in 1922 employed 20,000 people.
These images, produced with a large format camera, show the last factory
with its ten employees just before its closure. Although documenting
industrial processes in a cavernous decaying old building, these rich,
almost lyrical, images address the loss of craftsmanship and tradition.
