This exploration of striptease in London's East End pubs began in 2000, when Julie Cook and Sarah Ainslie independently started to photograph in the pubs and Sarah had met Lara Clifton, an exotic dancer herself, who was writing in her spare time. Sarah Ainslie has documented the women and the private domain of their backstage changing rooms, whilst Julie Cook recorded both the deserted interiors, some of which are lush Victorian venues, and also the striptease dancing itself. Lara Clifton also invited customers, bar staff and her fellow dancers to write about the dancing, which she has compiled into a book. The exhibition's combination of the various types of imagery and writing provides a strong experience of the milieu and its participants.
